This week's Wednesday Woman is uber-talented makeup artist and entrepreneur Lauren Napier. An extremely successful makeup artist who has worked with some of the biggest names in fashion, sports, music and film (think Lady Gaga, Amy Schumer, John Legend, President Clinton, Ben Affleck wtc), Lauren's work has also appeared  in top fashion publications including Vogue and Vanity Fair. After identifying a problem with current cleansing wipes and a gap in the market, she launched her own product CLEANSE by Lauren Napier which is now stocked in top retailers including Amazon and net-a-porter. Here's her story:

Newnham: What were you like growing up and what were your interests - what/who inspired you?
Napier: As a kid I was always up to some sort of adventure or mischief. I was accident prone and had a very active imagination! But it was when I was cast as a witch in a school play, when I was 7 years old that I first discovered the power of makeup how it can transform someone. I loved musicals and Disney movies, my favorite character was the Wicked Witch in “The Wizard of Oz", The Evil Queen in "Snow White", Ursula in "The Little Mermaid" and who could forget Cruella De Vil in "101 Dalmatians”/ The characters were sinister, poised BUT I thought their makeup, brows and hair were perfection!  

Newnham: When did you start working as a make up artist and how did you grow such an incredible and well-known client base?
Napier: I began working as a makeup artist in the early 2000’s. I would attribute my success in the industry to my passion and work ethic because you have to have both in this industry! It’s been said that you have to have tough skin to make it in this industry because it’s full of rejection. There is also something to be said about being on time and being quiet. People appreciate punctuality, it translates to dependability. Productions start early and can last all night so having self awareness is a bonus, sometime you just need to shut up and get the job done! Lastly, just be good at your job, develop your skills, know the trends and never stop learning or being creative. 

Newnham: Tell us about CLEANSE and how you ended up developing your own new product?
Napier: I developed my line out of necessity. A clean, effective and travel-friendly cleanser didn’t exist in this capacity. Newnham:  What have been your greatest lessons from starting a new product line?
Napier: There is always more to learn, there is not enough time in the day, patience is a virtue, and if you complete your to-do list everyday, you are ahead of the game! 

Newnham: What obstacles have you faced running CLEANSE and how has it shaped you/your business? How did you overcome the obstacles?
Napier: Everyone will tell you “No!,” You have to believe in yourself and your brand and climb over any obstacles. Let go of your weak links. It’s your business so don’t be afraid to make the hard choices of letting someone go. Any time you are faced with opposition, it is important to stop and reassess. You can overcome any obstacle if you are willing to reevaluate your strategy. 

Newnham: If you could go back in time, what advice, if any, would you give a younger Lauren starting out in her career?
Napier: If I could go back in time I would tell a young Lauren, "Continue to trust your instincts!" We know instinctively what is right and wrong, what feels good and what doesn’t. When I follow my instincts I am usually on target, and when I don’t, I fall on my face every time.
