This week's amazing Wednesday Woman is Amy Roiland ~ fashion blogger extraordinaire at A Fashion Nerd, and Founder of the amazing social network app for fashionistas - FashionTap. Here's her story:-

Newnham: Can you tell us about your background - what were you doing before creating your app and how did you come up with the idea?
Roiland: I worked in PR and Marketing for an e-commerce design studio for a while and this is how I came up with the idea for FashionTap. My boss asked me to locate fashion bloggers in Austin for SXSW so that I could send them denim. I was pulling my hair out of my head trying to locate bloggers ranked in Austin... NO WHERE can you do this. Instagram is a cluttered mess of everyone. I then reached out to my tech friend and figured a way to create this app - he hooked me up with Hyperion360.com and I worked directly with a developer to create FashionTap.

You can locate bloggers, stylists, brands, retailers, photographers, designers, hair, makeup, PR firms, etc in different cities, ranked by popularity. You can also directly link your products to your photos and make money when people click to buy. I integrated the affiliate link in the app through ShopStyle so that the user can make money; I take no cuts. I also hated going onto Instagram and asking girls , "Who makes your shoes?" "Who makes your sunnies?" So now on FashionTap, they can directly link whatever they want and I can buy in just one click! You can also link your website manually or your youtube video you just shot!

Newnham: Have you faced any hurdles whilst developing and launching the app, and if so, how did you overcome it?
Roiland: I haven't faced too many issues with this app - everything has been very seamless. My developer is a genius and works fast with me. I tell him to change or add something and he does this within minutes. My biggest hurdle right now is getting people to make accounts and use the app. We just started to market it and I just hired four interns so that is for sure helping me. I think once the word is out on how you can make money on this app, and be found as a blogger, it will spread like wildfire.

Newnham: You're working on some other projects - can you tell us more about them?
Roiland: I have a ton of projects going right now, it's insane. I don't even know how I manage all of this. I am designing a shoe for a big shoe company, I am designing a button jewellery line for FashionTap, I am working on my blog all the time, and I work on FashionTap trying to raise funds to open up offices. I have so much more I want to do too!

Newnham: What/who inspires you?

Roiland: Wes Anderson's movies inspire me; the 1960s inspires me; business women and tech women inspire me; tech men like Jack Dorsey and Mark Zuckerberg inspire me BIG TIME. I love the tech world so much, I am obsessed.

Newnham: If you could go back in time, what one piece of advice would you give to yourself about starting and running your own business?
Roiland: STICK TO IT. NEVER EVER QUIT. KEEP FOCUSING ON ONE THING AND OBSESS OVER IT. I started a blog in 2008 and then quit, then started one in 2010, then quit then started one in 2012 with a friend and quit that and then started A Fashion Nerd and really stuck it out. Now I have 30,000 real followers and I worked my ASS OFF. I have posted over 650 blog posts in the span of 2 years... I work, work, work. Even when I am sick I still go out and shoot a blog. I started by taking my own photos by myself, I still take a lot of my own photos. Don't wait on anyone else for your career. Take your career in your own hands and learn everything you need to learn to get ahead in that area. I will never quit FashionTap, not ever. I have a golden app that can change the entire world of fashion if everyone partakes.

I am so passionate about this app and so proud that I created it myself. A lot of these fashion apps coming out are all created by men who are tech men who don't care about you or fashion, they just want your money. I give a shit about who uses it and about fashion and tech, and I've built a beautiful tool here that everyone can benefit from. I don't make money from the app's users and I never will. I am so in love with what I am doing and so in love with fashion so I feel I really stand out here. Plus I am a woman in tech, and that's a rare thing...!
